The decision was made by the club's management, who believe that Schmelzer is not currently playing to his full potential and that he would be better suited to another club in the Bundesliga or elsewhere in Europe.
Schmelzer has been with Borussia Dortmund since 2011 and has made over 250 appearances for the club, scoring 34 goals and assisting 29 more. He has also represented Germany at various levels, including the Under-21s, U21s, and senior national team.
Despite his impressive record, Schmelzer has struggled to make an impact on the pitch for the Dortmund side this season, having only started three of their last ten games. The club believes that he will benefit from a fresh start elsewhere and that he can still play at a high level if given the right opportunities.
The club's statement read: "After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways with Marcel Schmelzer at the end of the season. We wish him all the best for the future."
